some hotels in Sandton do have shuttles running to and from the airport - check with them first. Not so sure about you getting a taxi - rather a get a legit transfer company to meet and greet you and transfer you to your hotel - they are all correctly insured just in case there is an accident.

SA does not have very good public transport. There is also 2 kinds of taxis. One is a mini bus which is very much a locals only transport, as it is crowded and unsafe, not only for crime, but roadworthiness is also very poor. Then you get what we call CABS, or MAXI TAXI. They are private cabs, and although they are safer and private, they too are not void of crime.
Your best bet is to hire a car, not only to get to your hotel, but for all your traveling.
Best is avis rentals or Hertz. And all these have stalls at the airport.
Of course it is safe. Johanesburg is an advanced City.
Have used taxis ad shuttle but honestly hotel shuttle is better.
Of course it's safe to take a taxi. Why are you coming here if you're so scared?
