We are going to waikiki in 2 weeks, and we have not rented a car. We always rent cars when we go on vacation, but we just want to relax and not have to drive at all for a week.
Is there some kind of shuttle, bus, cab that can take us from the airport to the hotel? Do we need to schedule in advance?
Please let me know if you've been there. What is the best way to go?How can we get from the airport to our hotel in Waikiki?
There is an airport shuttle to Waikiki, and of course plenty of taxies. There is also The bus, which is the cheapest, if you walk out to nimitz HY under the freeway, just get on any bus that says waikiki or waikiki hotels. If you have a lot of lugauge you should take the shuttle. You don't have to schedule in advance.

Live cam Waikiki beach, City and County of HonoluluHow can we get from the airport to our hotel in Waikiki?
First off you are not visiting Waikiki you a visiting the island of Oahu. There is more to Oahu then Waikiki.
As others some hotels have shuttles.
You can take a cab. However the public bus system http://www.thebus.org/ in Hawaii is great and will cost you $2.25 for a ride. I believe it is the #20 (but you may want to double check) that goes from the airport to Waikiki. Keep in taking the bus will take longer however it is much cheaper the a cab.
When my husband and I visited Oahu back in 2008 we rented a car and was thankful that we did. Oahu is a big place and you will want to do more than be at Waikiki (which is the tourist place). We drove around the island one day to and spent time at the North Shore, another day we drove to the Polynesian Cultural Center which if I remember correctly is almost an hour drive from Waikiki.
If you like to come and go as you please I highly recommend a car.
As a major metropolitan area, Honolulu has many options for getting around. I didn't rent a car initially when I went and I took a cab from the airport. You don't need to reserve one in advance and you just need to get in the cab line after picking up your luggage. Signs will direct you to it. There are shuttles, but they charge per person and that would have resulted in a higher charge for the 4 of us who went.
If you want to reserve a shuttle, it might be better to do so in advance. Here are some web sites for some:

There is a bus called Robert's Hawaiian or something like that, we just got back and we took that. It was about 9 dollars for one trip and 15 for a round trip (they'll take you back to the airport but you have call the day before).
Some hotels have shuttle service to and from the airport.
There are also taxis you can take.
